Sonar plays a high-frequency tone through your speakers. Your hand reflects that sound back to the microphone. Movement changes the reflected frequency—the Doppler effect—and Sonar uses those changes to detect gestures.

No data is sent back to us. Audio is processed locally in memory and discarded after processing. Sonar saves recent motion readings locally for debugging when a scrolling session ends.
Dogs and cats can hear frequencies around Sonar’s default 20 kHz tone. Use it away from pets and stop if they seem uncomfortable. Pet safety and sound levels across Mac models still need evaluation.
